ABOUT MNGCA
Welcome to the Minnesota Genetic Counselors Association. MNGCA is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2007 and became a working chapter of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) in 2009. We are made up of genetic counselors and genetic counseling graduate students from across the state of Minnesota. There are now over 100 genetic counselors currently practicing in Minnesota. Most are members of MNGCA and NSGC.

Genetic counselors are specially trained in medical genetics and in discussing genetics issues with patients and families in a way that is understandable and applicable to their situations. Because genetics is playing an increasingly important role in healthcare, MNGCA is working to increase access to genetic counseling services for individuals throughout Minnesota. We designed this website to provide you with accurate information about genetic counseling and how it might help you and your family.

Due to the small and specialized nature of the genetic counseling profession, we understand it can sometimes be tricky to locate a genetic counselor in your area who works in the specialty that you seek. NSGC has a tool developed that allows you to easily search for a counselor and provide you with the contact information needed to schedule an appointment. Education is a primary focus of our organization, and we want to provide you with the most current information on relevant genetics topics. In addition to educating patients and families, MNGCA also works to provide continuing education to Minnesota genetic counselors through education conferences.

Overall, it is our goal to empower patients and families by linking them with support groups, resources, and genetic counselors who can help them better understand the hereditary condition they face and incorporate that information into their lives.
